The Journey Is Hard, Don't Go It Alone

Loneliness. Doubt. Knowledge gaps. No peer group for support. No direct access to someone who knows what they’re talking about. Relentless distractions. Confusion about advice and direction. Constant and overwhelming fear of rejection.

These are the challenges that student affairs job seekers deal with EVERY day.

These struggles can lead to unfocused action, wasted resources, poor decision making, and feelings of overwhelm. Faced with these struggles, it's no wonder why so many student affairs job seekers burn out short of achieving their dreams.

This is especially relevant as Covid-19 has upset the world economy, higher education, and student affairs as a whole.

The student affairs job search is one of the most difficult parts of the student affairs journey.

It’ll never be easy.

Success will never be guaranteed. But the probability of success – finding the positions you want, applying for them, navigating interviews, and negotiating your offer - can be dramatically improved by joining forces with others who share your struggles and your common goal.

Introducing “The Student Affairs Job Search Academy”

At the Student Affairs Job Search by the Job Hakr, I’m proud to serve a whole community of student affairs job seekers at all different stages of their careers. This community is public – we rally around our functional areas, challenges and goals. Yet, we’ve never had a private community… until now!

02 Common Experiences copy.jpg

All student affairs journeys are unique but they all benefit from common experiences:

  • Enriched education

  • Immersive training

  • Professional networking

  • Interactive collaborations

  • Access to expert advice

Deriving value from those experiences is only possible when the culture providing those experiences is rooted in a most sacred quality: safety.

Above All, It's Safe Here

The need for safe places that can be trusted to provide acceptance, development, privacy, and compassion has never been more important. That is core principle behind The Student Affairs Job Search Academy.

From that mission flows our community beliefs:

  • Relationship building opportunities with like-minded student affairs job seekers that can yield solutions to problems, lead to prosperous partnerships, and establish friendships.

  • First access to new student affairs job search concepts, content, and other offerings from the Student Affairs Job Search by the Job Hakr

  • A community that welcomes members from diverse backgrounds including race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, neurodiversity, and physical ableness.

  • A focused environment to accelerate learning and networking due to the absence of fluff content, noisy discussion channels, and immature members.

  • A privacy-first attitude toward all current and future aspects of the community.

I’m thrilled to establish such a nurturing ecosystem in a singular community void of hate, hype, and distractions.  THIS is a place where serious, positive, and motivated student affairs job seekers jumpstart their careers.

Academy Curriculum

Inside the academy we enjoy pushing the boundaries, being ourselves, and responding to the needs of our members. That mentality led us to imagining a unique community experience for the Student Affairs Job Search Academy.

Specifically this community and included programs cover the following critical and essential topics for the student affairs job search:

  1. Defining a Direction for your Job Search

  2. Writing & Revising your Resume

  3. Writing & Revising your Cover Letter

  4. Determining and Applying for Open Positions

  5. Preparing for Student Affairs Interviews

  6. Job Offer Review and Negotiation

 Academy Schedule and Agenda

There is a lot of content to cover and goals to achieve in the academy. Making sure that members are aligned, committed, and motivated is the utmost importance.

As such, membership in the academy includes dedicated time on a weekly basis over a set schedule. This is done in order to hold members accountable for achieving both their individual and group goals.

This agenda is accomplished by adhering to three core pillars:

Private Community - which comes to life through the following capabilities:

Learning channels for discussions around skill development topics such personal/professional focus, finding postings, applying to postings, resume writing, cover letter writing, interview help, and offer negotiation.

  • Discovery channels for member networking, collaborations, and more

  • Private channels for focused discussions among member of the cohort

  • Private 1:1 messaging between community members

Exclusive Content—which comes to life through the following resources:

  • Webinars & Courses: You’ll have access to the growing list of recorded webinars and courses, valued at $97+ each. The Student Affairs Job Search Academy Members are also invited to attend the live recordings of future webinars & workshops.

Direct Access and Support—which comes to life through the following experiences:

  • Regular live and synchronous meetings hosted by Dr. Dave Eng on your job search

  • Professional networking organized around themes

This structure will continue to evolve as I learn more about the diverse characteristics, interests, and needs of our cohort members. Because really, in terms of future vision, we're just getting started!

05 Core PIillars copy.jpg

I’m looking for the founding cohort

Motivated. Driven by purpose. Committed to self-awareness. Willing to work hard. Eager to forge your own path. If that sounds like you, and if you've been looking for a private community of like-minded student affairs job seekers to join forces with, then I’d love to welcome you into The Student Affairs Job Search Academy.

The Student Affairs Job Search Academy is in beta mode. That's special - for me and for you. It's a moment of exploration. It's a moment of innovation. It's a moment to establish deep roots. If you feel extra motivation to be a part of something special from the very beginning, now is the opportune moment to become part of the founding cohort in our  private community.

But first, let's see if The Student Affairs Job Search Academy is a good match for you:

It's a match if you…

  • believe in the virtues of humility, empathy, optimism, and tenacity

  • value diversity in all its forms and are accepting of others regardless of their appearance, ideas, and backgrounds

  • accept the responsibility to work hard and diligently because you know that success is not guaranteed or easily achieved

  • are emotionally ready to participate in the giving and receiving of feedback that may at times challenge your original thinking

  • have already started in the job search process and have at least a resume and cover letter (even if it’s just a draft)

07 NOT a Match copy.jpg

It's not a match if you…

  • are motivated by competition, status, or are egocentric

  • prefer to surround yourself with people who look, think, and act very similar to you academically, professionally, and personally

  • expect success to come easily, quickly, and largely on the backs of others assuming your responsibilities

  • are not yet ready to share your ideas, questions, challenges, and needs with others for their constructive feedback

Feel like it's a match?

Outstanding! Here's what you need to do to join:

  1. Complete the application - Click here or the button below to access our application. It's short. I’ll review applications in the order in which they were received.

  2. Be patient – I will only issue 10 founding member invitations. Invitations will be issued on a rolling basis. Please be patient with me as I process them.

  3. Accept your invitation - If I choose your application, then you'll receive an invite to join The Student Affairs Job Search Academy via email. It will contain a special link to enroll in the cohort.

Important FAQs

That's a lot of information. Thanks for hanging in there with me! Still, you may have questions. Here are some important ones to know about as you consider applying.

Is there a cost to join The Student Affairs Job Search Academy?

Yes. The founding member pricing is a $497 flat fee to join the community and complete the program.

Am I obligated to join if I apply and receive an invite?

No. Your invitation will be valid for a period of time once you receive it. If you don't wish to join, just ignore it. Still, please only apply if you're very serious about it. I spend time on each and every application received.

I applied but did not receive an invitation. What does that mean?

First, thanks for applying! If you haven't yet heard back from me, that likely means your application is still in the queue. The first round of applications will take me about two weeks to process. Please remember to check your spam folder as the invitation might have done there.  If you use Gmail, check the other inbox “tabs,” then feel free to follow up with me.

I was put on the wait list. What does that mean?

It means that I believe you'd be a great member for the academy but that, unfortunately, I do not have any more invitations to give at the moment. Invitations will be sent to applicants on a rolling basis to those on the wait list after the academy is assessed and re-evaluated.  So please be patient and remain on the lookout! Invitations are sent out first-come, first-serve.

What system is used for The Student Affairs Job Search Academy?

Mighty Networks is the platform used to host The Student Affairs Job Search Academy. Courses, educational, and instructional content is hosted through Teachable. Mighty Networks is a cross between Slack, Facebook Groups, and LinkedIn. Teachable is a Learning Management System (LMS) similar to Blackboard, Canvas, or Brightspace.

How is The Student Affairs Job Search Academy different from enrolling in other courses and webinars by The Job Hakr?

The Student Affairs Job Search Academy is a private community with interactive discussions, exclusive content, and meetings. The academy also requires an application to join. In contrast, stand alone courses like A Deep Dive into 1st Round Interviews are available for purchase by anyone.  This program is created to combine both existing educational content with community support and direct professional guidance.
