Summary

News flash: A recent survey of over 10 million employees indicates a downturn in the perception of their career development during Covid-19.

Peakon, a leading employee success platform for over 1,000 companies worldwide, revealed in its new report, "The Impact of COVID-19 on Employee Engagement," that workers in North America saw the largest downturn in professional growth perception at the height of the pandemic.

Professional growth perception can be defined as employees' perspective of how many opportunities for growth they see in their personal career development.

Although the survey indicated an unexpected 2% increase in overall employee engagement and a 6% increase in employees' positive perception of their work environments, the report data showed a 0.5% global decline to the response to the statement, "I feel that I'm growing professionally." North America saw the greatest dip in this sentiment, declining by 3%. Whether or not professional growth has stalled, workers' perception is that the pandemic has put the brakes on upward mobility and career advancement for the indefinite future.

MORE FOR YOU. As a global career expert, I believe the survey discloses the massive uncertainty facing those who have not lost their jobs during Covid-19, as well as those who are job seeking or pursuing a career transition.

As we finish out the year and employees continue to work remotely, perceptions of professional growth may change again.

Focus on learning about other people's careers, and connect with successful people through professional networking channels like LinkedIn.

A second objective is to share your future career goals and discuss how you can get from here to there.

Yes, we are in a challenging era, but that does not mean you have to give up on your professional growth and dreams.
