Summary

Recalibrate Your Area Of Focus

Even if you know what career direction you want to pursue, spend time examining your field with fresh eyes. Some, such as grocery stores, fast food, telecommunications and healthcare, may not match your original career vision but can provide valuable opportunities. Customer service, analytics and project management skills span all industries. If you need to reconsider your career goals, explore your options.

A career assessment can help you determine what kind of work will best leverage everything you have to offer. Consider comprehensive career assessments that explore interests, aspirations, cognition, behaviors and working style preferences, culminating in career matches to positions across industries. You can also find career exploration tools through books and online resources, often available through your local library.

Invest In Measurable Skill-Building

Use job postings to see what skills are in demand across employers in real time. When approaching new skills, like a coding language, find books to obtain an overview. Ask someone who uses that tool to describe one or two projects they worked on early in their career. Set aside chunks of time, as if you were in school, to devote to skill development, and offset that with time for connecting with people, a refreshing break that develops your network.

Network With A Purpose

Early careerists often stall as they set out to network. Mobilize yourself by finding a partner and collaboratively tackle networking. Everyone will have a story to tell about what they did during the novel coronavirus and summer 2020. By reestablishing your career goals, developing key skills and building your network to study your industry, you’ll make sure yours is the story of moving forward.
